BOOK WEEK - Term Two - 29th June 2016 - New Zealand Book Council - Visiting Author 2016

TIM TIPENE

Favona Primary School had the privilege of Tim Tipene as our visiting author for 2016, through the New Zealand Book Council 'Writer's in Schools.' 

Tim Tipene, is a children's writer and founder of Warrior Kids, a community organisation working with at-risk children.

This is the second time Tim has visited Favona as a visiting author, the last time was seven years ago.

Students and Staff were inspired by his life story and how he became an author. Tim read 'Taming the taniwha' and 'Hinemoa te toa'. Students were focused and really enjoyed his impersonation of the characters as he read. 

I would highly recommend Tim for Book Week if you are wanting an author.

JUST A QUICK NOTE:
He said that his new book will be out around November called 'Sun Catcher' but yet the name could still change to 'Maui's Sun Catcher.'  So keep an eye out for that story, as I will be.

Roly the Anzac Donkey

Summary: Matt McPherson is cycling around town  delivering the last edition of the town newspaper, The New Zealand Times. It is being closed by its owners. Using wonderfully detailed illustrations of the changing landscape of the town in combination with excerpts from the newspaper, author Bob Kerr takes the reader through a brief history of New Zealand, from the first settlers up to the present day. At the end of the book, we find Matt saving the newspaper by appointing himself editor, putting it online and running it from his laptop. Here the reader can actually go online to a website related to the book to learn more about New Zealand history, and access our national online encyclopedia, Te Ara. Changing times is a fascinating introduction to our history for 7-12 year olds. It will also engage parents and grandparents who will recognise their own lives and family histories in its pages. The Ghosts of Tarawera
